View 1930's Impressionist Oil Painting. Venetian Canal Scene With Gondolas. Signed with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. The painting depicts a lone gondolier with his oar in hand (rèmo) paddling towards an arched stone canal bridge in the distant. The moored fishing boats suggesting access to the Adriatic Sea is very close by. For sale is a very well painted oil on canvas classic depiction of the Venetian canals of Venice Italy. Circa 1930's - 1940 in age. Maybe earlier The painting depicts a lone gondolier with his oar in hand (rèmo) paddling towards an arched stone canal bridge in the distant. Along the sides are moored empty gondolas along with Venetian fishing boats that are docked, suggesting this is an evening sunset scene as the fisherman are in for the day. The moored fishing boats suggesting access to the Adriatic Sea is very close by. The artist does an exceptional job of capturing the mood of the setting sun as it casts light on one side of the buildings while shading the building to the right. The sunlight seems to give a warm glow to the canal bridge up ahead and perhaps a clock tower even further up along. Overall the painting is bursting in colors and rich hues. The painting is on an American stretcher/canvas (Anco...later on Anco -Bilt) so we believe it to be an American artist painting in Venice. The signature seems to be readily readable as F A HELBY. At least that's what we read it as. Certainly done by a schooled and talented artist but that is all we know. Condition: Some scribble like surface scratches to the sky and some near the gondolier. We believe this to be only on the varnish layer. The painting needs a good cleaning. We have added one picture to show the difference between the area, which was previously under a frame which was removed, and the exposed surface. You can tell that there will be quite a difference in coloration once cleaned. Once cleaned you'll have a stunning Venetian scene painting Done in a standard size of 16x20 making it very easy to frame in either a nice ebony cove mold frame or a deep cove gold gilded frame.
