The floor of the Valley is 4,000 feet above the sea, and 5,000 feet below the adjacent mountain region of the Sierra Nevada. The Valley is about nine miles long and averaging a mile in width. Its granite walls rise almost perpendicularly to the height of from 3,000 to 6,000 feet above the floor of the Valley, or 10,000 feet above the sea. Sublimity and beauty are combined as perhaps nowhere else in the world. Plants and flowers cover the level ground like a carpet and perfume the air like a conservatory. The granite walls are entirely destitute of vegetation in most places. Mirror Lake reflects the surrounding mountains so perfectly that it has been called the 'Toilet Glass of the Yosemite.' The giant Half Dome, the North Dome and Mount Watkins may look in it and see whether the hair is properly parted on their bald heads.
