View Pre-WW2 7-1/2" NORITAKE JAPANESE HANDPAINTED LUSTERWARE FLORAL DISH ChikaramachI with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. Exports, ceased permanently after the U.S. entered WW2 on December 7, 1941. Thanks to historian Mark Brown, who I quote liberally here, I learned that Chikaramachi, whose backstamp is printed on the bottom of this plate, was created in 1912 by and for Morimuragumi (later Noritake), most likely as an apprenticeship/feeder division for the company's Western exports.  The name Chikaramachi came from one of the two streets between which Morimuragumi built several porcelain decorating factories in Nagoya, Japan at the end of the 1800s. Noritake registered the crown within a laurel wreath backstamp on the back of this plate in 1928, and though there was one more variation, it's possible that this backstamp was used until all  Chikaramachi production, obviously including US. exports, ceased permanently after the U.S. entered WW2 on December 7, 1941. Whether 85 years old or 98, or somewhere between, this is a sweet dish to have on the table or on the wall. Condition: Used.
