He wears a traditional red suit with deeply textured white trim, black boots and a full molded beard. There are also splits or separations along portions of the molded body seams, including the hat, side and back. Offered here is an early Japanese celluloid Santa Claus figure, dating approximately to the 1930s. Santa measures approximately 7 inches tall and is made from lightweight, hollow molded celluloid. He wears a traditional red suit with deeply textured white trim, black boots and a full molded beard. He carries a large gray-green sack over his shoulder with a small baby doll peeking through the side, while his opposite arm holds a basket filled with toys and packages. The figure retains an embossed maker or factory mark on the back beneath the sack. A partial circular paper country-of-origin label also remains on the bottom of one boot. The original painted finish remains bright and displays especially well from the front. There is expected fading, rubbing, discoloration, scratches and scattered paint loss from age. Please note the condition carefully: both boots have areas of broken and missing celluloid around the undersides and heels. There are also splits or separations along portions of the molded body seams, including the hat, side and back. Additional small surface losses and cracks are present. The figure still stands securely and presents attractively from the front, but it should be handled gently because early celluloid is thin and naturally fragile. A charming survivor from the early era of imported Japanese Christmas decorations, with the toys, baby and softly worn colors giving Santa the feeling of a holiday object remembered from childhood.
