No original packaging.  An authentic antique Japanese porcelain export bowl, hand-painted in the vibrant Yamatoku style with a striking Famille Noire (black ground) interior. It features a detailed courtyard scene with court figures, lush peonies, bamboo, and an elegant bird in flight. The upper rim is decorated with a vivid yellow band displaying longevity peaches and pomegranates. Marked "NIPPON" on the base, strictly dating this piece between 1891 and 1921. Mark Meaning and Dating Origin: "Nippon" is the literal translation of "Japan" in Japanese. Exact Period (1891 - 1921): This mark was strictly used during these years due to the U.S. McKinley Tariff Act, which required all imported goods to bear the name of the country of origin in English. In 1921, U.S. authorities changed the law and required the use of only the word "Japan," so this bowl ceased to be manufactured with that exact mark after that date. Age: The piece is between 105 and 135 years old, made at the end of the Meiji era or during the Taisho era. Physical Analysis Dimensions (17.5 x 7.5 cm): Its compact size and high sides are characteristic of a medium serving bowl or a tabletop punch bowl. Weight (565 g): This is a solid weight, consistent with the thick export porcelain of that era, designed to withstand transatlantic voyages. Condition of the Base: It shows wear and orange oxidation marks on the unglazed ceramic ring (the foot), which is completely normal and expected, validating its age. Design Features Interior: It depicts a scene of Asian court figures in a garden surrounded by peony blossoms, a bird in flight, and bamboo trees. Upper Rim: It features a striking bright yellow band adorned with floral motifs and fruits (such as longevity peaches) in green, pink, and blue glazes. Style: Although it follows the aesthetic of Chinese export glazes, this type of piece with thick yellow rims and dense decoration on a black background was widely produced and popularized by Japanese Yamatoku-style workshops between the late Meiji period and the Taisho era (early 20th century). Exterior Decoration Details Upper Yellow Band: Repeats the internal pattern with a bright yellow background bordered by gold lines. Fruit Design: Peaches, symbolizing longevity, are painted in shades of blue and pink, combined with pomegranates that represent fertility. Lower Body: The rest of the porcelain base is left white, decorated with more subtle and stylized floating floral motifs.
