Some pieces of glass simply hold flowers. Others become the flower. This striking vintage hand-blown art glass vase takes its form from the wonderfully sculptural Jack-in-the-Pulpit flower , with a slender rising neck opening into an exuberantly hand-formed, asymmetrical rim. The glass is positively luminous. A brilliant citron to golden yellow forms the predominant color, while ribbons and suspended accents of red-orange, aqua blue, green and creamy white travel through the glass. Because the decoration is incorporated into the glass itself rather than painted onto the surface, the colors shift and overlap beautifully as the vase is turned or viewed in changing light. The lower body swells gently before narrowing into the tall neck, while the substantial clear glass foot gives the vase both visual and physical balance. At the top, the glassmaker has pulled and manipulated the molten glass into the dramatic peaked and flared Jack-in-the-Pulpit silhouette. It is wonderfully cheerful without feeling ordinary — a little piece of sculptural glass that can carry a room all by itself. Condition Very good vintage condition based upon careful visual examination. I see no obvious chips, cracks or repairs . The delicate sculpted rim appears intact, which is particularly important with this form. The underside shows the characteristics expected of a handmade glass piece. Small bubbles, variations in color placement, irregularities in the rim and other minor inclusions or tool marks may be present and are part of the handmade character rather than necessarily damage. As with all vintage glass, there may be very light surface or shelf wear commensurate with age and previous display. History This vase is best described as vintage Mid-Century Modern / later 20th-century hand-blown art glass in the Murano tradition , likely dating broadly from the 1960s–1970s era , although an exact date cannot be established without a maker's label or documented provenance. The dramatic form is generally known as Jack-in-the-Pulpit , named for the North American woodland flower whose hooded bloom rises above its stem. Glassmakers translated that organic silhouette into an especially expressive vase form, pulling and shaping the hot glass into a tall peak surrounded by a sweeping, asymmetrical mouth. The vivid multicolor decoration, free-form shaping and emphasis upon the glassmaker's hand fit beautifully within the exuberant decorative vocabulary associated with postwar Italian and Venetian art glass. Styling — All Year Long This is one of those wonderful vintage pieces whose personality changes completely depending upon its surroundings. Spring: Place it among blue-and-white porcelain, white ironstone and fresh greenery. A single white tulip, ranunculus or flowering branch would allow the vase itself to remain the star. Summer: This glass was made for sunshine. Style it on a garden-room table, bar cart or breakfast-room shelf alongside citrus, woven rattan, bamboo, brass and lush green foliage. The yellow, orange and aqua become almost tropical in bright natural light. Early Fall: Pair it with amber glass, old brass candlesticks, brown transferware and a few miniature pumpkins. Suddenly those citrus colors become harvest gold, persimmon and autumn green. Halloween: Against black, this vase becomes wonderfully dramatic. Add it to a sophisticated Halloween vignette with black candlesticks, antique books, ravens or dark botanical prints. The acid yellow takes on an almost glowing quality. Thanksgiving: Let it provide a jewel-like burst of color among walnut woods, brass, brown-and-white china and natural greenery. Christmas: This may be my favorite surprise. The citron yellow reads beautifully as gold when surrounded by deep evergreen, red velvet, antique brass and warm white lights. Those little red accents already hidden within the glass suddenly belong perfectly to Christmas. Winter: After the holiday decorations disappear, place it against dark wood with cream pottery, books and bare branches. The color provides precisely the bit of warmth a winter room needs. And it certainly does not require flowers. Displayed empty, it is a small piece of sculptural art glass — particularly beautiful where sunlight can travel through the layers of color. A Gilded Stag Note There is something especially appealing about vintage glass that refuses to behave quietly. This little vase has all the exuberance of a summer garden captured in molten glass — yellow sunshine, flashes of orange, cool aqua and green, all gathered into the improbable shape of a flower.
