The Case: Housed in a gorgeous, fully intact, antique tooled leather wooden case featuring an embossed floral bouquet and ribbon motif. The original brass latch hook is present. The interior velvet pad is in excellent condition with a sharp stamp. Description: Up for sale is a genuine, mid-19th-century sixth-plate (1/6 plate) Daguerreotype featuring a crisp portrait of a gentleman sporting a classic 1850s chinstrap beard. He is dressed in formal mid-Victorian attire, including a dark frock coat and black cravat. Photographer & Studio: The interior velvet pad features a crisp, beautifully preserved embossed maker's mark reading: "ROOT / CHESTNUT ST. / PHILAD." This attributes the piece directly to Marcus Aurelius Root, one of America’s most celebrated pioneer photographers, operating from his famous gallery at 140 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia.Condition Details: The Plate: Clear image with excellent contrast. There is a standard tarnish ring/oxidation around the oval perimeter of the brass mat, typical for a piece of this age.
