Beautiful antique Victorian / Aesthetic Movement picture frame, dating approximately 1880–1905, with a richly layered architectural design and wonderful old surface. The frame is constructed in wood with a warm walnut-toned outer molding accented by dark recessed lines. Inside is a particularly attractive dark figured band with a faux-bois or highly figured wood appearance, bordered by narrow gilt-toned moldings. Delicate incised geometric ornament appears at the centers of all four sides, giving the frame a subtle Eastlake and Aesthetic Movement influence without overwhelming the overall design. The combination of dark walnut tones, gold accents and restrained geometric decoration gives this frame a very handsome late-19th-century look that would work beautifully with an oil painting, portrait, landscape, print or antique photograph. Opening fits approximately a 10 x 12 inch image. Overall exterior dimensions are approximately 15 x 17 inches, and the molding is substantial at roughly 3 inches deep/wide in profile, giving the frame a strong presence on the wall. The back retains old wood construction, period nails and an older hanging wire. There is expected age-related wear including scattered surface marks, small finish losses, darkening, minor abrasions and wear to the gilt-toned areas. I do not see any major structural break in the frame. The aged surface and minor imperfections add to its authentic antique character.
