Antique Victorian two-piece silk dress/gown, dating to approximately the 1890s. An extraordinary surviving late-19th-century women's ensemble consisting of a fitted, structured bodice and matching full trained skirt. The dress is constructed from a lustrous ivory/cream ribbed fabric that appears consistent with silk faille , with silk satin ribbon trim and an extremely lightweight sheer silk-like gauze/chiffon or organza used at the upper bodice and cuffs. The bodice is beautifully constructed and highly detailed, with a fitted and boned interior, shaped seams, hook-and-eye front closure, interior waist stay, high neck, long fitted sleeves, ruffled cuffs, and a dramatic sheer layered capelet/yoke edged in narrow satin ruffles. A wide satin ribbon encircles the waist and forms an elaborate bow at the back with exceptionally long trailing ends. The matching skirt has a narrow fitted waist, substantial fullness and pleating toward the back, and a longer back creating a train. The lower skirt is elaborately finished with multiple bands of narrow gathered satin trim and a large applied bow motif at the front. The skirt retains its period interior lining and hook-and-eye waist closure. The interior bodice shows extensive period construction, including boning, hand finishing, hook-and-eye fastenings and an internal waist stay. There are also extremely faint handwritten/numerical markings on the interior lining, possibly period dressmaker/workroom notations. No maker's label has been found. Because of the age and fragile condition, the garment was not stretched or manipulated to obtain measurements. CONDITION This is an authentic antique garment approximately 130 years old and is being sold as a historical textile/display/study piece in fragile condition. There is extensive age-related deterioration and silk shattering throughout , including numerous splits, holes, losses, fraying and weakened areas. This is particularly pronounced on the sleeves, bodice and upper portions of the skirt. There is additional deterioration to some of the sheer fabric and trim, along with discoloration, staining, age toning and general wear throughout. Interior fabrics also show staining and age-related deterioration. Despite its condition, the ensemble remains remarkably complete and retains an exceptional amount of its original decorative and structural detail, including the bodice and skirt, boning and interior construction, sheer capelet/yoke, ruffled trim, satin waist sash and bow, skirt decoration, train and closures. Please examine all photographs carefully. The photographs are an important part of the condition description and intentionally show the deterioration in detail. Due to the fragile silk, I would not recommend this garment for wear . It is best suited to a textile collection, costume study, museum/educational collection, careful display, photography/film reference, or conservation project.
