Estate sale find, vintage original  Swimsuit Bathing Beauty Photo 5"X10" Stockings Swim Dress Original, circa 1920s. Young women in the 1920s embraced the newfound freedom to enjoy swimming and sunbathing on now coed beaches and in a more sensible garment but older generations were not comfortable with these racy new girls and their modern, revealing fashion.  To prevent women showing off too much of their physique, many city governments passed ordinances that controlled the length of women’s suits, the size of the arm openings, and the deepness of the neckline. Volunteer police forces were created at some beaches, such as the Sheriffettes in Rockaway Beach, New York, to enforce the dress code. Women were subjected to their suits being measured in front of other swimmers to be sure they met the requirements, such as bottoms being no shorter than six inches above the knee. Those whose suits did not meet regulations were issued citations, escorted from beach, or in extreme cases, arrested. Thousands of women were taken into custody in the 1920s for swimwear infractions.      These women of the Roaring Twenties rejected the old-fashioned swimming costumes and the censorship of their bodies. They defied the ordinances, paid the fines, and even went to jail so they could enjoy their summers on the beach in practical, fashionable swimwear.  By embracing these radical styles of swimsuits and proving their practicality, the suits continued to transform, eventually leading to the high-waisted two-piece suits of the 1940s-50s, the bikinis of the 1970s, and eventually to the mixture of all of these styles we wear today.
