A Japanesehand-painted landscape hanging scroll (kakejiku / 掛軸) depicting a misty mountain landscape with a waterfall, river, rustic bridge, trees, a small thatched dwelling and a lone traveller crossing the water. A Japanese hand-painted landscape hanging scroll (kakejiku / 掛軸) depicting a misty mountain landscape with a waterfall, river, rustic bridge, trees, a small thatched dwelling and a lone traveller crossing the water. The painting combines subdued grey and brown washes with pale blue-green water and touches of green foliage, creating an atmospheric sense of depth from the distant mist-covered peaks to the waterfall and river in the foreground. The small traveller and rural dwelling give the landscape a particularly appealing sense of scale and journey. Across the upper part of the painting is the classical inscription 夏雲多奇峰 , meaning approximately “Summer clouds form many extraordinary peaks.” The phrase gives the scroll a clear summer-season character. The lower-right area carries a black signature which appears to read 佳泉 (Kasen) together with a red seal. The artist's exact identity has not been established, so the scroll is offered on the strength of the painting itself rather than a specific attribution.
