For sale is a pair of Footjoy Classics Alligator Saddle Shoes Oxford Golf Cleats Men's 7 EE. Is there a metaphorical Holy Grail in vintage shoe collecting? Regardless of what models or brands people pine after, most would agree that the collection seen here (or this pair specifically) almost certainly qualifies. I present to you, complete with original packaging, box and price tag, a FootJoy Classics Model 56952 Black Alligator Saddle Oxford Golf Shoe. Produced in 1988 and originally sold through Sawada Pro Golf Shop in Waikiki, these shoes were released at a truly revolutionary time for FootJoy, following their acquisition by Acushnet. This was immediately before the introduction of DryJoys in 1989, as traditionally constructed golf shoes increasingly gave way to technical, waterproof footwear. Despite their now-archaic screw-in metal cleats and traditional construction, golfers and shoe enthusiasts alike still lust over these shoes in online forums. There is anecdote after anecdote about the unattainability of the exotic offerings of the Classics series, and customers being encouraged to purchase cheaper alternatives. After all - and I'll clarify that your eyes aren't failing you - these shoes sold for a whopping $1,700 per pair back in the day. For perspective, that's almost $5,000 today! It's no surprise that professionals like Phil Mickelson and Payne Stewart sported FootJoy exotic models during their careers. I could go on about the beauty of the hides used for these shoes, and how they bested virtually all of their competition at the time. For that, however, I recommend my FootJoy alligator post from May, as that does a better job. These shoes feature a luxurious Black exotic Alligator leather upper, classic Footjoy Saddle Shoe Oxford golf shoe design, round waxed braided black laces, metal insert system on the underside of sole and heels (to accept vintage metal cleats or modern plastic ones), leather lining, cushioned leather insole, leather midsole, leather outsole, stacked leather and composite heel, and Goodyear Welted Construction. For reference, here are the approximate measurements (taken along the outsole): Length - 11.125" Width (at the ball of foot) - just under 4" These shoes are exceptional New Old Stock/Deadstock, and ready for wear or display! I listed as New With Defects, owing to general storage wear to the shoes and box, and faint mildew smell (mostly removed during cleaning). These shoes were in deep storage, so I thoroughly rehydrated them and conditioned them as a precaution against the mildew odors and to get them rehydrated. I first applied multiple coats of Weimans Leather Conditioner (spray) and let them sit over several days, then cleaned them with Weimans Leather Cleaner, and conditioned them with Weimans Leather Conditioner.
