Vintage 1970s British Brutalist Studio Pottery Owl Sculpture Big Eyes Click images to enlarge Description Vintage 1970s British Brutalist Studio Pottery Owl Sculpture Big Eyes Characterful Hand-Modelled British Ceramic Owl With Expressive Eyes and Richly Mottled Earth-Tone Glaze Highlights Charming British studio pottery owl dating to circa the 1970s. Strong Brutalist-inspired sculptural character. Distinctive oversized circular eyes, one open and the other partially closed. Bold, compact and deliberately simplified form. Hand-modelled pottery construction with expressive incised feather decoration. Richly mottled brown, ochre, cream and earthy glaze. Attractive later 20th-century British decorative sculpture. Compact cabinet size measuring 9.5 cm high. From a private collection in Northern England. A highly decorative and collectible example of 1970s British studio ceramics. Introduction An exceptionally characterful small British studio pottery owl dating to circa the 1970s, distinguished by its bold sculptural form, heavily textured surface and wonderfully expressive oversized eyes. The owl has been reduced to a compact and strongly articulated form, with deeply incised feather patterning across the wings and a richly variegated earthy glaze which emphasises the tactile nature of the handmade ceramic body. Its unusual eyes are perhaps its most memorable feature. One is fully open while the other appears partially closed, creating an engaging and almost Surrealist expression within an otherwise strongly Brutalist-inspired composition. The result is a delightful example of the more sculptural direction taken by British studio pottery during the later 20th century, when individual modelling, texture and surface became increasingly important qualities in their own right. Catalogue Details Object: Owl Sculpture Medium: Glazed Studio Pottery Origin: United Kingdom Date: Circa 1970s Period: Late 20th Century Style: Brutalist-Inspired British Studio Pottery Maker: Unidentified British Studio Potter Subject: Owl / Bird Catalogue Note The sculpture depicts a compact upright owl with an unusually weighty and simplified silhouette. Its wings are defined by pronounced linear modelling and incised feather decoration, while the broad breast remains relatively restrained, allowing the mottled glaze to become an important part of the overall design. The surface colouring ranges from warm ochre and cream through caramel and deep brown, producing an irregular patination-like effect which enhances its Brutalist character. The large projecting eyes are constructed almost as separate circular sculptural elements. Their asymmetrical expression gives the piece a playful individuality and contributes to its Surrealist-inspired character. The underside is hollow, consistent with the construction of the work as a ceramic sculpture. The Maker The sculpture is unsigned and the individual maker has not presently been identified. Its construction, modelling, glaze treatment and decorative language are consistent with British studio pottery of the later 20th century, particularly the more sculptural and Brutalist-influenced ceramic work produced during the 1960s and 1970s. Comparisons may be drawn with contemporary British studio potteries producing expressive animal sculpture during the period, although no sufficiently close documented example has presently been identified to support attribution to a particular maker or pottery. Provenance Private Northern England collection. Acquired for the collection of Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD®. Dimensions Height: 9.5 cm Width: 7 cm Depth at base: 6 cm Condition Report Offered in fine used vintage condition. The sculpture displays general surface wear and an attractive aged patina, together with some small chips and losses in places, all commensurate with age, previous use and its handmade character.
