This unusual small box has a wonderful old-fashioned treasure chest form with gently tapered sides and a beautifully worn, textured wood surface. The hinged lid features a nautical scene with two sailing ships and large reddish sales, giving the box a distinctive maritime/folk art character. The interior includes a removable wooden lift-out tray, making this useful for jewelry, keepsakes, small collectibles, sewing notions or other treasures. The box has the look and construction of a mid-20th century handmade or artisan piece. It was found in a box along with numerous other collectibles from the 1930s-1950s, and based on its construction, decoration and appearance, I estimate it dates to around that period, possibly around the 1940s It measures approximately 6 inches long, 3 inches wide and 4 1/8 inches tall. Condition: Considerable surface wear consistent with age and use; exterior has scratches, scuffs, abrasions, finish loss, discoloration and areas of edge wear. Lid remains attached by its original hinges. One top corner has slight looseness/separation but remains attached and does not feel immediately unstable. Removable interior tray has some hardened residue that has not been removed in order to avoid potentially damaging wood. Interior shows age-related discoloration, marks and wear. Condition: Used.
