Beautiful antique Japanese Imari porcelain bowl, dating to the 19th century and displaying particularly rich hand-painted decoration. Large shaped reserves contain stylized flowers and foliage, while smaller panels incorporate delicate bird and botanical motifs. Beautiful antique Japanese Imari porcelain bowl, dating to the 19th century and displaying particularly rich hand-painted decoration. The substantial bowl is decorated inside and out in the traditional Imari palette, with deep underglaze cobalt blue, iron red, green and other polychrome enamels. The interior incorporates numerous alternating geometric and floral panels surrounding a central floral medallion. Large shaped reserves contain stylized flowers and foliage, while smaller panels incorporate delicate bird and botanical motifs. The extensive decoration continues around the exterior, making this an especially attractive display piece from every angle. The bowl has a nicely formed raised foot and is unmarked on the underside, as shown. The quality, palette and extensive hand decoration are consistent with antique Japanese Imari/Arita porcelain. Measures approximately 9-1/2 inches diameter x 4-1/4 inches high. Condition: Estate-fresh antique condition with expected age-related wear, scattered surface wear, glaze and firing irregularities and some rubbing/loss to the enamel decoration. There are two areas of rim damage — an inner rim chip and a more noticeable outer rim chip, both photographed closely. No restoration is known. Please review all photographs carefully for complete condition. Despite the rim chips, this is a very decorative and substantial early Imari bowl with unusually dense, colorful decoration.
