Rouault's style is so unique and recognizable (thick outlines, saturated colors) that an expert doesn't always need a signature to attribute a work. Size painting : 14 x 10 1/2 inches. Size frame : 18 x 15 inches. State of conservation : small lack of pictorial layers, see photos. some gaps on the frame, see photos. Provenance : Private Collection, France. This bouquet of flowers could very well have been painted by Georges Rouault . Here's why this attribution is highly likely : Thick and dark outlines : The most striking feature is the use of thick black outlines delineating the shapes, strongly reminiscent of medieval stained glass work. Rouault, having been an apprentice glassmaker, incorporated this distinctive graphic technique into his painting. Intense and saturated colors : The colors are applied in rich and vibrant flat tints, often with a thick paste (impasto), which gives a strong presence to the flowers and vase. The palette, although sometimes dark in the background, uses oranges, greens, and blues with force. Simplification and stylization of forms : The flowers and vase are not depicted in a realistic or detailed manner. The forms are simplified, almost massive, and stylized, a constant in Rouault's work, which favored expression over mimesis. General Atmosphere: The whole piece exudes a mood that is both dark and luminous, typical of Rouault, who knew how to infuse emotional depth even into simple subjects. These stylistic elements are Georges Rouault's visual "signature" and are found in many of his works, including his other flower bouquets. Although this painting on paper is unsigned, it could very well be by Georges Rouault. This gave a work originally produced on paper the solidity and scale of a canvas painting, potentially facilitating the enlargement or completion of a composition begun on a smaller format.
