He was born in 1980 as a son of the most reputable and respected Shigaraki-ware pottery artist legend Kiyotsugu SAWA . Today, he is recognized as a "rising star" pottery artist in Japan. As shown by his resume (the 2nd photos from the last), he held his exhibition not only at many places in Japan but also at San Francisco and New York. And, recently in Asian countries as well. * Shigaraki-ware is a stoneware, which is made of a special clay (available only in Shigaraki) and fired at very high temperature (1,250~1,300 degrees Celsius). It does not use or apply any glaze before firing. The glaze is naturally formed in the kiln when certain conditions met from ash of red pine tree and feldspar / iron contained in the clay. Thus, it looks very natural and primitive. And not sure how it looks until it comes out from the kiln. Stoneware is still produced in Japan, because it is loved by the people who practice tea ceremony and Ikebana flower arrangement. This was made for drinking Japanese Sake, and yet, of course, you can use it to enjoy other beverages such as whisky. Also, it is a phenomena art itself. Incredibly beautiful!! It was made by a quite unique technique called "Hiki-Dashi" in Japanese that means "Pull-Out". The cup was pulled out from the kiln when the kiln's temperature reached and kept at the highest (1,250 - 1,300 Celsius) and rapidly cooled down, which generated incredibly beautiful green glaze that is called "kiln jewelry" (or "Vidro-Yu" in Japanese). It is brand new stored in the original wooden box signed by Katsunori (the 3rd and the last two photo). He engraved his mark at the outside bottom of the cup (photo #8 - 10).
