That is all it takes to place a man, born in 1675 or 1676 and painted at the height of the reign of Louis the Fourteenth. He wears a plain white band at the throat, not lace, and a brown coat without ornament, and he is holding a written sheet. Those are the marks of a man whose business was documents.
