Exceptional Antique Japanese Kutani Porcelain Charger (Meiji Period) Exceptional antique Japanese Kutani porcelain charger dating to the Meiji period (approximately 1868 to 1912) . This impressive charger measures approximately 14.5 inches in diameter and just under 2.5 inches high. The front features an exceptionally detailed, elaborate hand-painted aka-e (iron-red) scene . It depicts traditionally dressed figures in a landscape surrounded by pine trees, flowering branches, peonies, birds, architectural elements, and overlapping decorative fan-shaped reserves. The primary figure is a high-ranking court noble wearing a traditional kanmuri (court cap) . The vibrant red borders are beautifully overlaid with a shimmering gold karakusa (scrolling vine) pattern , which symbolizes eternity and prosperity. The garments, foliage, flowers, borders, and architectural details are embellished with extremely fine gilt work, moriage accents, and intricate brushwork . The charger is richly decorated in iron red, black, brown, soft pink, gray, and gold. The extensive raised and painted gilt details are especially striking in person. The photographs capture many of the individual details, but the depth, scale, and overall visual impact are even more impressive in person. 🌿 Reverse & Studio Markings The reverse is also fully decorated with hand-painted bamboo, flowering branches, chrysanthemums, and an iron-red geometric border. A heavily worn antique paper label remains on the underside. The underside bears a multi-part hand-painted iron-red Japanese mark: Right Column: Includes “Dai Nippon” and “Kutani” and appears to reference the Kaneidō (金井堂) decorating studio or workshop. Left Column: Appears to end with “sei” (meaning “made by”) and may include the artist or decorator name Keikō Taizan , although the full reading has not been independently confirmed. The mark is therefore believed to associate the charger with the notable Kaneidō workshop and a named individual decorator.
