This is an unusually large-format tintype , measuring approximately 10" x 7" . Most surviving tintypes are considerably smaller, making this large portrait an interesting example of early photographic history. The gentleman is shown in a formal three-quarter portrait, wearing a dark coat, white shirt and bow tie. The photographer and identity of the sitter are unknown. Approximate size: 10" x 7". The tintype shows substantial age-related wear, including numerous scratches and abrasions, surface loss, oxidation/discoloration, spotting, edge and corner wear, and some bending/distortion of the metal plate . Despite the condition, the portrait remains clearly visible and has considerable period character. Please examine the photographs carefully for condition.
