This was made by Y u OKADA ( 1946 ~ ). He has been perceived as one of the most respected and reputable Hagi-ware pottery artists in the last half century. * Hagi-ware was established in late 16th century. It has been appreciated as the best utensil for tea ceremony. The color of Hagi-ware can vary from white, beige, and to pale orange. This particular cup is called Shiro-Hagi-ware. Shiro means white. T he cup shows the ultimate attractiveness of Shiro-Hagi-ware. It is shining and yet very calm. Please review the pictures. It is really amazing for you to drink Japanese sake in many meanings, e.g., s hape, size & weight!! As shown by the first and the last three pictures, it came with an original wooden box and a leaflet introducing Yu OKADA and his family history. The potter Yu drew "Hagi-Guinomi" (萩 ぐい吞 in Japanese) and his signature in cursive writing and put his seal on the box. He also engraved his mark (or seal) at the outside bottom of the base (photo #9 - 10). The cup is in excellent condition. A stain is observed on the leaflet. FYI, according to the leaflet, his family (an a ncestor) built a kiln and started pottery in late 18th century in Hagi. Yu OKADA was born in 1946 and became the 8th owner of the kiln. He won so many honorable prizes at many prestigious art exhibitions in Japan.
