As only the second model featuring the recognizable marker formerly known as the jazz stripe, the Sk8-Hi brought a whole new look to the Vans family. Building on that first legendary high top, the Sherpa Sk8-Hi features sturdy textile uppers with a camouflage print and Sherpa details. This lace-up shoe also includes re-enforced toe caps, supportive padded collars, and signature rubber waffle outsoles. Van Origins The Van Doren family (James and Paul) establishes Vans in 1966 along with two other partners. They focus on designing sneakers and selling them directly to customers. The company develops an especially high-grip shoe, initially  conceived as a boat shoe, that would hold the wearer firmly to a pitching deck. It turns out that the design was especially useful to the skateboarding community as well.  Collaborating with a chemist, James Van Doren develops the rubber recipe used in the sole. A mechanical engineer by training, Mr. Doren also devised the sneakers characteristic tread pattern of diamonds interrupted by a band of tiny six-pointed stars at the ball of the foot. Together, rubber and tread made the sole clingy. Vans capitalizes on two emerging crazes in the 1970's, skateboarding and BMX. They begin to aggressively market their sneakers to skateboarders, which, after a rocky start, leads to booming success. Vans becomes the skateboarder sneaker of choice because of its great outsole characteristics. Skaters began to request various new designs, colours, patterns, and textures.
