Has expected grime and light rust, definitely would need restored to use, but not everyone wants a restored tool, so this one will arrive with the beautiful patina of age. It was in our basement along with lots of other family items, the original user / owner long ago departed, so there is not a lot we can answer as to it's history, but if there is something pertaining to the physical nature of the item that you can't tell from the photos, PLEASE ask to avoid disappointment. There is no date on this, however, considering the age and the likeness of this plane to a STANLEY No. 7 Type 8 "Similar Frog" it could be very early 1900's, but would have to be between the years 1900 at the earliest and 1919 at the latest. Please examine the photos as part of the description and ask questions prior to purchase. This task is usually now done by finger-eatin' machinery, however, there are many de-evolutionists who delight in using these cast iron marvels. Show just how tightly wound you are when you wow your pals with the tightly wound shavings that these planes produce. There are a lot of folks out there who believe that these longer planes have to be perfectly flat in order for them to work. Good luck finding one that's perfectly flat, as they don't exist, all of which is proof enough that the old timers, who depended upon these tools for their livelihood, could make effective use of them in a non-perfect state. Thing is, you can, too. Internet found company tool info: A huge 21 and 1/2 inch Union No. 7 Iron Jointer Plane. The UNION Manufacturing Co. of New Britain,Conn USA existed from 1880-1919, they manufactured Planes from 1900 until the company was acquired by STANLEY around 1920. The Union planes were virtual copies of the STANLEY planes of the time. Except The Union Manufacturing Co. planes did feature a thicker blade and wider knob . STANLEY operated their own factories and headquartered in New Brittan, Conn they'd snap up the local competition early.
