This intimate and tender scene captures a young child in a red sweater and white bonnet, deeply focused on drawing, with a toy bear by their side. The brushwork is soft yet expressive, typical of Ruin’s impressionist style, with a muted, elegant palette and delicate use of light and shadow. Ingrid Ruin (1881–1956) was a Finnish impressionist painter known for her nudes and portraits—rare subjects for women artists of her time. Trained in Helsinki and Copenhagen, she studied under Albert Edelfelt and Anders Zorn, later becoming Zorn’s assistant. Her work was exhibited across Europe, though she remained little known in Finland until a 2005 retrospective. Ruin's art is now part of the Serlachius Foundation collection.
