Great 8x10-inch black-and-white glossy publicity photo / movie still was produced to promote the 1931 Universal horror / monster film, FRANKENSTEIN, which starred Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, Mae Clark, Edward van Sloane, Dwight Frye, John Boles, Frederick Kerr, Lionel Belmore and Marilyn Harris. The film was directed by James Whale and based on a novel by Mary Shelley. Title information is printed in the lower border. We are not sure of the exact age of this still. It came from a movie still collection where the majority were originals, but there were also a few newer copies mixed in. And although the photo quality is superb, and it is printed on the correct type of fiber-based photo paper, this still just looks too crisp and bright to be from the 1940s.
