Exceptional vintage Zuni Knifewing deity screwback earrings, finely crafted in solid sterling silver and set with natural turquoise cabochons. These earrings are strongly attributed to Horace Iule (Aiuli) (c.1901–1978), one of the most respected Zuni artisans of the mid-20th century. In The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths (1944), John Adair identified Horace Iule as “one of the two or three best artisans in the Zuni Pueblo,” noting that his skill and reputation allowed him to rely entirely on his silversmithing for his livelihood. Iule was especially admired for his mastery of silver casting, clean architectural forms, and finely detailed figural work — all qualities clearly evident in this pair. Each earring depicts the Knifewing deity, a powerful Zuni spiritual figure associated with protection and healing. Each earring contains three bezel-set turquoise cabochons — a half-moon, round, and oval — all beautifully matched. The silverwork shows distinct, crisp edges, precise bezel work, and careful attention to detail, hallmarks of a master silversmith. The earrings are hallmarked “STERLING” on the screw backs only, which is consistent with known examples from this era. While not fully signed, the design, construction, and workmanship strongly support attribution to Horace Iule.
