Oil on canvas portrait by Sallie Anne Tate (1922 - 2009). A noted painter known for her scenic landscape scenes of New Jersey and Vermont, as well as portraits. DuMond developed a prismatic palette, used especially for landscapes.   Oil on canvas portrait by Sallie Anne Tate (1922 - 2009). 'Woman with summer straw hat', embellished with flowers in a 'three-quarter' view pose in a style of realism / naturalism. A noted painter known for her scenic landscape scenes of New Jersey and Vermont, as well as portraits. She was a graduate of Smith College, studied at the Arts Students League of N.Y. and was also a member of the National Arts Club. While at the Arts Student League, Tate became a protégé of the famous listed painter Frank Vincent DuMond, (1865 - 1951). She also studied during summers with DuMond, in Pownal Vermont and was one of his last students before his death. DuMond developed a prismatic palette, used especially for landscapes. His students were taught to see a progression of prismatic light in premixed paints placed in a tonal progression flowing from yellow to violet on the warm side and yellow to green to blue-green to violet on the cool side. This painting is beautifully crafted with a technique emphasizing subtle value gradations, meticulous surface texture, and careful articulation of light and shadow to create a convincing illusion of reality. The artist pays close attention to precise details and proportions to depict an accurate representation of their subject. Signed on back of frame 'Sallie A. Tate' and measures including frame 15.5'' by 17.5''. Canvas measures 12" by 14". Painting in excellent condition and ready to install.
