She has beautiful blue eyes and graying hair that must be pulled back. There is also another marking of 1051 ?. handwritten off to the left side. When I peeled back the protective paper on the backside, it looks like this may be on canvas but it is hard so I don’t know if that’s because of the glass on the front or if it’s truly not canvas. This Antique (google tells me it is late 19th Century) maybe early 20th century Pastel Drawing / Painting Portrait is of a Woman possible in Mourning, wearing black with the mourning cameo at her neck. She has beautiful blue eyes and graying hair that must be pulled back. When I found this piece at an estate sale it had a slip of paper tucked into the back of the frame that said Martha Howard (this is included). Knowing that a new backing was on this piece, curiosity got to me and I slowly peeled the backing off to find handwritten on the bottom of the original frame, what I believe says W L Howard (possible Martha) along with what I think is 2th No 6 A - all handwritten. There is also another marking of 1051 ? handwritten off to the left side. I don't know what any of this means and I am not sure if this piece is signed on the front (nothing is visible but it could be under the frame - I did not want to take it out of the frame, since it looks like someone tried to save the original framing and mounted it to the inside of this frame. This 2nd frame looks old and has a very tiny etching all along the outer edge. Frame does have chips. When I peeled back the protective paper on the backside, it looks like this may be on canvas but it is hard so I don’t know if that’s because of the glass on the front or if it’s truly not canvas. This beautiful lady is framed behind glass. It measures 28.5" w x 22.5" tall, including the frame and weighs just under 5 lbs. I have reattached the backing (since it still stuck) and will leave it there. You can investigate this further if you choose. She is beautiful and should be enjoyed by her next adopted family. Is this your great grandmother??? Condition: Used. Category: Art › Paintings.
