A striking and unusual piece of USSR historical and political memorabilia, featuring a large three-dimensional profile portrait of Joseph Stalin executed in embossed / repoussé-style metalwork. Stalin is portrayed in his characteristic military tunic with marshal-style collar decoration and Soviet awards on his chest. The portrait is surrounded by a hand-textured hammered background, giving the piece a particularly strong sculptural appearance. The metal panel is mounted onto a substantial wooden backing board and held away from the wood by four large cylindrical brass-tone metal mounts, one at each corner. This construction gives the plaque an almost architectural, dimensional appearance rather than that of an ordinary stamped wall plaque.
