The expressive brushwork and free-form design are characteristic of the Swatow tradition. Swatow ware, also known as Zhangzhou ware, was produced primarily in the Zhangzhou region of Fujian Province in southern China from the late Ming Dynasty through the Qing Dynasty. These provincial porcelains were widely exported throughout Southeast Asia and became known for their lively decoration and rustic charm. The plates reflect the folk ceramic traditions of southern China and remain popular among collectors of Chinese export porcelain and blue and white ceramics. Both plates measure approximately 6 inches in diameter. The glaze shows natural age-related surface lines typical of antique porcelain. One plate displays stronger age lines and darker toning to the glaze. The undersides show kiln marks and firing characteristics consistent with traditional production. The plates present well and display nicely as examples of traditional Chinese provincial porcelain.
