Antique hand-forged iron hearth or tasting ladle with a long flat handle, deep rounded bowl and integral hanging loop. The long handle would have allowed the user to reach into a cooking vessel while keeping the hand farther from the heat, while the loop at the end provided a convenient way to hang the utensil near the hearth. This ladle measures  14 3/4” overall , with an approximately  2 1/2” diameter bowl . The long handle would have allowed the user to reach into a cooking vessel while keeping the hand farther from the heat, while the loop at the end provided a convenient way to hang the utensil near the hearth. The photographs show considerable irregularity and surface variation characteristic of old utilitarian ironwork. The bowl is relatively deep and rounded, while the long handle gradually broadens toward its looped end. The entire piece has an attractive naturally aged surface with extensive dark oxidation, brown rust coloration, pitting, scratches and wear. No maker’s mark is apparent in the photographs. Condition:  Antique condition with extensive oxidation, pitting, discoloration and surface wear consistent with age and use. It has not been polished or restored.
