Beautiful vintage Indiana Glass Hen on Nest covered dish in stunning iridescent blue carnival glass, a highly collectible color commonly referred to as Bicentennial Blue in the collector and resale market. Produced by the Indiana Glass Company of Dunkirk, Indiana, this large two-piece Hen on Nest features exceptionally detailed molded feathers, a tall fan tail, and a striated nest base with a rounded beaded rim. The deep blue glass has a brilliant carnival finish that shifts between blue, teal, purple, pink, green and gold depending on the lighting and viewing angle. Several photos have been included under different lighting to show the beautiful variation in the iridescent finish. Indiana Glass produced its Hen on Nest dishes in numerous colors and finishes throughout the 20th century. This style of striated nest is associated with Indiana Glass production during the 1970s–1980s, placing this example within the company’s vintage carnival-glass revival era. One particularly interesting part of Indiana Glass history is how this iridescent finish was created. Metallic compounds were applied to the hot glass and fired onto its surface to produce the permanent rainbow effect. Former Indiana Glass employees referred to this process as “salting” the glass. This is an especially striking example for an Indiana Glass, Hen on Nest, carnival glass or vintage pressed-glass collection.
