The figure of this KAKEJIKU is known as 菅原道真（Sugawara no Michizane)[845-903] who was a scholar, poet, and politician of Japan at that period. He is regarded as an excellent poet, particularly in Kanshi poetry, and is today revered as the god of learning. There are many shrines called either 天神（Tenjin) or 天満（Tenman) across Japan which dedicated to him as a god of learning. People are praying at those shrine today especially for passing exams, and so many school students, and their parents, pray for success at his shrine before important entrance exams which is usually in Janually. What is "KAKEJIKU"? -The Japanese Hanging Scroll- and how to enjoy them? KAKEJIKU is traditionally displayed in TOKONOMA(an alcove in traditional Japanese room). Modern Japanese houses even don't have a TOKONOMA, so less and less people are displaying them these days. It is a shame that people forget about KAKEJIKU.
