Most likely an early carpenter's mortise chisel for making cuts and notches. A hand fits perfectly under the splay! It's rust free, whistle clean, and has been lightly oiled for protection. Vintage Blacksmith Forged Rugged 2 1/8" Straight Edge Chisel in clean bud splayed condition.  Chisel measures 9 1/2" long, weighs 1 Lb. 12 Oz, and has a short piece of wooden handle stub inside a splayed socket.  The edge could definitely use a good honing.  Most likely an early carpenter's mortise chisel for making cuts and notches.  A hand fits perfectly under the splay!  It's rust free, whistle clean, and has been lightly oiled for protection.  If you collect the early ones, this one's for YOU!
