The image captures a winding two-lane road lined with white guard posts, flanked by dense mixed forest of spruce, birch, and hardwoods, with a rocky stream bed visible to the left. The road in the foreground is the route through Wilmington Notch, a narrow mountain pass carved by the West Branch of the Ausable River. The postcard was produced by the "$5-Photo-Co.," Photo Park, Canton, New York - a known producer of real photo postcards in the mid-20th century. The card is unused. Historical Notes Whiteface Mountain in Essex County, New York, is one of the most iconic peaks in the Adirondack High Peaks region and one of the few accessible by road. In 1935, the Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway was completed - a toll road reaching nearly to the summit - making it a major tourist destination accessible by automobile. Wilmington Notch, through which this road passes, became an important gateway route for visitors. Whiteface Mountain gained international fame when it hosted the alpine skiing events for the 1980 Winter Olympics held at Lake Placid, New York. The mountain continues today as a major ski resort and state park. The Wilmington Notch Campground, established along the West Branch of the Ausable River visible in this photo, became one of the most popular camping destinations in the Adirondacks. This is classified as a Type 1 original RPPC, printed close in time to when the photograph was taken, estimated circa 1930s-1940s.
