In 1878, Newton Heath LYR Football Club was formed by the the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. Once the team became independent from the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway and lost ties from it's origins in Newton Heath, the team was renamed Manchester United and changed colours to red and white.
