For consideration is this set of 4 antique hand painted “Geisha Garden”plates made in Japan. They are each marked on the base (see photos) but I was unable to verify a maker. There are 2 scenes of geishas, all dressed in brightly colored kimonos. Set of 4 Antique Hand Painted Geisha Garden Plates 7½ Inches Japan For consideration is this set of 4 antique hand painted “Geisha Garden”plates made in Japan. They are each marked on the base (see photos) but I was unable to verify a maker. There are 2 scenes of geishas, all dressed in brightly colored kimonos. There are 3 geishas on a balcony and 3 geishas in the lower gardens. The plates are rimed in red (a rusty cinnamon color), and have a variety of flowers in pink, yellow and red. These plates are commonly referred to as "Geisha Girl" porcelain, a type of inexpensive Japanese export ware popular in the early 20th century. The scene typically includes Japanese ladies in kimonos surrounded by gardens, temples, or lakes. While often labeled as hand-painted, many pieces from this era used stenciled outlines filled in with color washes. The plates measure 7 3/8 inches in diameter and all are in very good antique condition with no nicks, chips, cracks or repairs noted. The back of one plate is heavily speckled (see photos). NOTE:   Information gleaned from the Janvierroad website:   From the late 19th Century until the 1950s, Geisha Girl plates, pitchers, salt & pepper shakers and a host of other items were readily available for sale and as giveaways in movie theatres and in boxes of supermarket products. They are less commonly known as “Kimono Lady” ware. More than 125 patterns were made, but all feature Japanese ladies in brightly-painted kimonos, typically surrounded by temples, lakes or gardens. Because they were free or inexpensive, they quickly became very popular. Most Geisha Girl pieces were completely hand painted until about 1920.   Stenciled wares were more common. The lines were filled in with a variety of color washes. You can feel these raised lines by running a finger over the piece. In almost all cases, the edges of older pieces were bordered in solid colors, and often accented with gold lacing or flowers. Condition: Used.
