Stanley Twardowicz (American, 1917-2008) Abstraction Gelatin silver print, 1958, signed in pencil and dated on the mount, with Twardowicz's address stamp on the reverse of the backing board; the mount light toned very close-in to the photograph, and some surface skinning to the edges of the backing board, but the photograph in very good condition Sheet 9 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches. Backing board 13 1/4 x 11 inches Twardowicz's first notable works in photography occur in 1948, in images of fishing nets taken on a trip to Mexico. However, he had been encouraged to study photo-retouching while a student at the Meinzinger Art School in Detroit in the early 1940s, and he may have been aware also of the camera-less photography of Henry Holmes Smith, and the similar abstract photographs of László Moholy-Nagy and Gyorgy Kepes. In the early to mid 1950s Twardowicz developed his biomorphic "poured" paintings - enamel paint poured in such a way to avoid any recognizable gesture of the artist - which were very well received, and it is quite possible, a few years later, that he saw the use of photographic chemicals and paper as another way these effects could be created.
