Smooth bottom No cracks in the handle or knob. very minor pitting on the bottom otherwise just alot of scratches. There is is a chip on the side of the sole which i don't think it would hurt from use. Up for auction I have a good condition sargent plane. It does have the name sargent and the number 409 on it. It retains about 80 % of the japanning. It does have some rust on it from sitting around. You could always clean it up and use it or keep it for your collection. I hope that answers your question.
