Both marked Occupied Japan. A lovely little Dutch boy and girl with her face turned down in a shy manner! This is a 3” set of small Occupied Japan salt and pepper shakers that were probably manufactured in the late 1940's to capture the attention of the Western market that loved Dutch themed items in the kitchen during the 1930's through the 1960's. The boy's cap is historically inaccurate for a Dutch boy, we understand, and is shaped more like the girl's cap because the manufacturer could use the same mold. The boy's cap should be more square and flatter. But this pair remains charming! No chips except for a fleabite on the tip of the girl's hat.. Original corks. Both marked Occupied Japan. On the back side they both have a little square of adhesive tape with the number 16. We do not know what the number 16 means for sure, but it might reflect the number in a collection or at an auction. Our items are found at estate sales, yard sales, thrift stores, and junk jaunts that do not allow us to know the origin or history of the piece. Some we wash and some we don't.
