Born into a "famous ethnic group in Jiangnan". Born during the Guangqi reign of Emperor Xizong of Tang Dynasty, he returned to Song with Emperor Li in the last year of Kaibao (975 AD) and passed away shortly after. Guo Ruoxu referred to him as a "Jiangnan Virtuous Scholar" as he had never been an official in his lifetime. Shen Kuo said he is "Jiangnan Cloth Clothes". His temperament is straightforward and broad-minded, with lofty aspirations.
