State and Madison Streets are in the very center of retail shopping district and is considered the busiest corner in the world. It is said that more people pass this corner in 24 hours than any other spot in the world." Visible in the scene: Marshall Field and Company Building (111 North State Street): an expansive building that housed the famous Marshall Field and Company department store. It's recognizable by its large, classical architecture and would have been a major anchor of the retail district at the time. Trolley Cars: The street is filled with traffic, including several trolley cars, which were a key mode of public transportation in Chicago during the early 20th century. Madison Street was one of the "Big Five" streetcar lines. The intersection of State and Madison is the zero-zero point for Chicago's street numbering system, a detail that was codified in 1908. All addresses in Chicago begin their numbering from this corner.
