Foch made his mark as a General very early in the First World War, when his men halted the German advance at Nancy. He was then promoted to lead the Ninth Army, part of the successful counter-attack against the Germans at the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. His rise continued, and he became commander of the French Northern Army during 1915. After the heavy casualties of Verdun in 1916, changes in French army tactics and leadership led to Foch's transfer to the Italian Front. These changes did not bring success and by 1918 Foch was back in favour. As Allied Supreme Commander he presided over the final months of the war and is often given much of the credit for the final defeat of the German Army on the Western Front. Condition: Used.
