This lot spans four straight years of "Lefty" Carlton at the absolute peak of his Hall of Fame career, across Topps, Donruss, and Fleer — including a Donruss Diamond Kings artist-rendered insert and a 1981 Fleer "Lefty the Golden Arm" specialty card. Why Steve Carlton belongs in any serious vintage collection: Carlton is a first-ballot Hall of Famer, inducted in 1994 with 95.6% of the vote. He's one of the greatest left-handed pitchers in baseball history — 329 career wins, 4,136 strikeouts (exceeded at the time only by Nolan Ryan, and since only by Ryan, Randy Johnson, and Roger Clemens), a 3.22 ERA over 24 seasons, 10 All-Star selections, and 2 World Series championships (1967 Cardinals, 1980 Phillies). He was the first pitcher in MLB history to win 4 Cy Young Awards (1972, 1977, 1980, 1982) — a record that stood alone for years. His 1972 season is legendary on its own: a unanimous Cy Young with a 27-10 record and 1.97 ERA for a Phillies team that lost 97 games — meaning Carlton personally accounted for nearly half of his team's wins that year, one of the most dominant individual pitching seasons of the modern era. What's in the lot: a real cross-section of his early-80s cardboard, right in the years he added his 3rd and 4th Cy Young Awards — the 1982 Donruss Diamond Kings insert is a nice artist-illustrated piece for display, and the 1981 Fleer "Lefty the Golden Arm" card is a fun nickname/specialty issue that doesn't show up in every Carlton lot.
