Offered is an impressive vintage sterling silver and turquoise squash blossom necklace with matching turquoise cluster dangle earrings by Diné Navajo silversmith Zeta Begay. The reverse of the large naja is clearly signed “ZB” and stamped “STERLING.” Published Southwestern jewelry hallmark references identify the ZB mark as belonging to Zeta Begay, whose name is also sometimes spelled Zeita or Zieta Begay. An older handwritten display label accompanying the set reads “SIGN. BEGAY SQUASH SET” with inventory number SR1588. This substantial handmade set features 10 large turquoise floral cluster side blossoms, with five blossoms positioned on each side of the necklace. Each blossom is decorated with individually shaped teardrop and oval turquoise cabochons. The large horseshoe shaped naja is decorated with multiple rows of turquoise cabochons arranged in an elaborate needlepoint and cluster style design. The necklace is completed with handmade style seamed silver beads, a double lower strand and a traditional hook closure. The matching earrings feature coordinating floral turquoise cluster designs and French wire style hooks. The exact turquoise mine origin and any possible stabilization or treatment have not been independently determined. Condition: This is a vintage preowned set with substantial natural patina, tarnish, oxidation, scratches, surface wear and age related marks throughout. The handmade style hollow silver beads display dents, flattening, uneven surfaces and visible seams. Some of the squash blossom stems are uneven or slightly bent from age and previous use. The turquoise stones display natural looking matrix, color variation, surface wear, lines, small imperfections and possible minor chips or fissures. No obvious missing stones were observed in the supplied photographs, but the buyer should carefully examine every image.
