View Antique 16th C Carved Wood Tabernacle Madonna Oil Painting Centuries Old Rare! with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. What a beautiful, rare tabernacle alter, featuring architectural designs, with putti on front for protection, a door flanked on each side by a column. This is a tabernacle with a handmade hinged door (lock is missing) but this is unbelievably old. Antique Rare Oil Painting Mary & Jesus Italian Early 16th c Wood Tabernacle with Putti. What a beautiful, rare tabernacle alter, featuring architectural designs, with putti on front for protection, a door flanked on each side by a column. This is a tabernacle with a handmade hinged door (lock is missing) but this is unbelievably old. Hand carved throughout, with painting-motifs above & on the door (very worn due to age). This has worming as proof of age. The top & bottom are protected by two chubby-faced gilded putti.  When the door is open, an oil painting is revealed on a very fine canvas or vellum? (see pictures in missing paint areas). The image depicts Madonna with baby Jesus holding a Gold Finch bird, complete with a red dot. Some scholars believe the finch pricked Jesus' thorny crown as He carried the cross, dripping one drop of blood as compassion for His pain. Many believe paintings with Jesus holding a gold bird are a foretelling of hope with the prediction of His rebirth and resurrection, that even today some finches have a bit of red on the head. However, there are several fascinating theories & stories about this symbolism of the bird in hand.  Here is a 2-in-1 treasure, most tabernacles are rare but have no hidden painting. I could not find another like it. From estate fresh to the market from an incredibly beautiful home with seriously exquisite pieces. Condition is Used/Pre-Owned in antique shape, showing worn areas due to extreme age (see pictures as part of description).  Extensive worming, some paint losses, missing relief decoration on pilaster of lower right molding.  Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator if restoration is a goal.
