A striking and unusually substantial vintage St. Benedict devotional crucifix necklace / chaplet , dating approximately to the mid-20th century, c.1950s–1970s , with c.1960 being a reasonable working date based upon its construction and styling. This is a particularly handsome piece, dominated by an impressive 3" tall × 1 5/8" wide St. Benedict crucifix . The cross features contrasting black inset panels , a raised three-dimensional corpus of Christ, an INRI tablet above, and an incorporated St. Benedict medal at the center. The reverse is equally attractive and displays a detailed image of St. Benedict of Nursia , surrounded by the inscription “CRVX S.P. BENEDICTI” , an abbreviation of the Latin Crux Sancti Patris Benedicti — “The Cross of the Holy Father Benedict.” The crucifix is suspended from a long, hand-strung arrangement of glossy black elongated oval beads , punctuated by contrasting cream/tan beads and joined with twisted golden-colored cord. The combination of the black beads, warm cord and large black-and-metal crucifix gives the piece a dramatic appearance. Condition: Very attractive vintage condition overall with age-appropriate surface wear, minor scratching, patina and signs of handling visible upon close examination.
