This beautiful and remarkably well-preserved Georgian mourning and sentimental brooch, dating to approximately 1800, is crafted in 9K gold and set with 14 antique flat-cut, foil-backed garnets and natural seed pearls, surrounding a central glazed compartment containing antique hairwork. At more than 200 years old, the survival and condition of this piece are exceptional. The outer border consists of 14 individually set flat-cut garnets, displaying the deep raspberry, wine-red and plum tones so characteristic of early Georgian garnet jewelry. The stones are foil-backed in the traditional Georgian manner, an early jewelry technique used to intensify the color and glow of gemstones, particularly in candlelight. Inside the garnet border is a wonderfully delicate frame of natural seed pearls. The pearls have developed beautiful soft ivory-to-silvery gray tones with age, creating an exquisite contrast against the saturated garnets and warm antique gold. At the heart of the brooch is its most poignant feature: an original-style glazed memorial compartment containing beautifully preserved antique hairwork.
