This is a traditional Olinalá lacquer box (cajita de Olinalá), a highly celebrated form of Mexican folk art originating from the mountain town of Olinalá in the state of Guerrero. The intricate designs are created using the rayado (scratched/etched) method. Artisans apply a base coat of colored lacquer mixed with chia seed oil and mineral pigments, let it dry, and then add a contrasting top layer. Before the top layer fully dries, they meticulously score and scrape away the negative space using a turkey feather quill tipped with a sharp maguey or huizache thorn, revealing the vibrant color layers underneath.
