He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and the Berlin Academy of Art before immigrating to the United States in 1923. Mortens became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1940 and was recognized as a "well-known Chicago sculptor" during the 1930s. He opened Mortens Studio in Chicago, Illinois, around 1931, producing sculptures until the 1950s. Perhaps he is best known for his lifelike animal figurines such as this one, crafted with wire-reinforced plaster and hand-painted detail. The dog weighs one pound and is about 7 inches long.
